“Ancient world, modern students”

Evey year the Cambridge School Classics Project hosts its annual conference for UK teachers. Usually this is an in-person event, but this year for the first time we are taking it online! This means colleagues from all over the world can join us remotely should they wish.

The speakers at this event are UK teachers and classics education specialists, and the event is focused on the UK context. There are many talks, however, which may prove interesting no matter where in the world you teach.

How do we tackle the complexity of the ancient world and make it accessible to all students in our modern classrooms? This question is more urgent now than ever in the wake of the challenges 2020 has presented. The CSCP conference this year, online for the first time in its history, will explore a range of themes on accessibility in Classics. There will be talks addressing all-abilities teaching, student wellbeing and SEND, and approaching difficult issues in the Classics classroom like slavery, decolonisation and sexual violence. Programme Highlights

Discussion Rooms

Join us for informal discussions on topics like the long-term impact of remote teaching in 2020. We will pre-circulate questions for discussion closer to the time.

 

Practical advice on difficult issues

From a case study of decolonising Classics at GCSE and A Level, to making use of Classical stories to help students navigate the issues of consent, respect and trauma, the programme this year puts classroom practice at the heart of its approach to difficult issues and problematic content.

 

Teaching for Qualifications

In addition to a Discussion Room for Qualification teaching, there will be a session aimed at all teachers of Latin literature at GCSE, using the texts from the Eduqas Travel by Land and Sea component as a starting point.

 

Remote Classics Quiz

Join us for an hour of Classics trivia and (optional) CLC-inspired fancy dress! Prizes will be offered for quiz winners and for the best costume.

 

A Modern CLC for Modern Students 

Despite the disruptions of 2020, work on the new UK edition of the CLC has continued. In our Saturday Plenary the team will share some of the principles behind this work and how a push for accessibility and diversity has shaped new material, including:

- new stories and characters

- reimagined cultural background sections

- the new language map of the series

- new ways of approaching About and Practising the Language

Ancient World Modern Lives

Dr Mai Musié

What can the ancient world teach those who are living in the 21st century? In the age of alternative truths and global interconnectivity, can the past reveal lessons for the future? In this talk, Dr Musié will use ancient evidence on imperialism, ethnicity, and identity as a way to tackle modern social and cultural questions and make a case that we are not so different from our ancient ancestors.

Dr Mai Musié is the Public Engagement Manager at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford. She has fifteen years of experience working on access and outreach projects within the public sector. Her research focuses on race and ethnicity in the ancient world, although she has a keen interest in medieval Ge'ez manuscripts. Mai is one of the co-founders of the Classics in Communities project, which aims to promote and encourage the teaching of ancient languages in schools. Her latest book, Forward with Classics (co-edited with Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson and Steve Hunt), has been published by Bloomsbury UK (2018). Mai is also the recipient of the 2019 Classical Association Outreach prize, an award given each year to the person deemed by the association's council to have most furthered the public understanding of classics.
